Oct 11, 2009 12:00 AM Sister to Sister Bike for the Heart WHAT: Join thousands of your closest cycling friends, event co-Chairs, Mayor Adrian Fenty and Wizards star, Caron Butler and other cycling celebrities on Sunday morning, October 11th to ride the spectacular closed roads of our nation's capital. Join 500 spinners on the floor of the Verizon Center. Our car-free road routes pass alongside the U.S Capitol, down Pennsylvania Avenue, and in front of the Washington Monument. But "Bike for the Heart" is more than a tour of our nation's capital - it's a personal journey each participant makes to move us closer to a world free of women's heart disease.
Bike for the Heart Events:
Family friendly America's Main Streeter 5 mile loop: Ride on a car-free Pennsylvania Avenue -- passing the White House and U.S. Capitol!
Arena Spinathon: Join 500 other spinners on the floor of the Verizon Center! This spinning extravaganza will include concert style lighting, music and video and be led by the area's top spinning coaches. You have a choice of one or two hours!
Heart-of-the-Nation Time Trial: One-up your competitive bike friends or just ride against the clock on our time trial circuit! This 5 mile circuit along Pennsylvania Avenue will climb to the US Capitol. This time trial, complete with start house and time system, is only available to the first 60 riders who commit to raising a minimum of $1,500.
Festival: Before and after all rides, riders will enjoy the "Bike for the Heart" Festival including live music, exhibitors and food. The festival will be inside and outside the Verizon Center on F Street (between 6th & 7th).
WHERE: The Start and Finish area is on Abe Pollin Way in front of the Verizon Center. The route will loop down 7th St. and onto Pennsylvania Ave. up to the White House and back down Pennsylvania Ave. to the U.S. Capitol, and then back to the Verizon Center. The road routes are fully supported with rest stops along Pennsylvania Avenue with water and food, medics, and bike mechanics. The pre/post-festival is inside and outside the Verizon Center.
WHEN: Sunday, October 11, 2009
Pre-Event Training The Time Trial and the Spinathon are challenging and it helps to train. Our spin coaches will be offering spin classes beginning in August. Check our website to join a class. Also, beginning in July (check SistertoSister.org for schedule), Olympic Gold Medal Cyclist Mark Gorski will lead organized training rides on some of the favorite roads in the area. Our website also lists numerous area training routes.
